Care & Cleaning For Your Rug

CARE & CLEANING FOR YOUR LUXURY RUG

When you buy a Knots Rugs rug you are investing in a product that will stand up to the test of time. A quality rug is durable and completely cleanable due to the high quality materials used in producing the rugs. At Knots Rugs we pride ourselves in the fact that we only use natural fibres such as silk, wool and nettle making our rugs a good investment.
Hoover you rug regularly and occasionally turn it around in the room for even ware from strong sunlight. A certain amount of shedding often occurs when a rug is new, but with regular hoovering this will become less and will eventually stop happening.

LOOSE THREADS:

Avoid pulling on loose threads as this will damage the weaving. Instead, use a pair of scissors to clip the loose thread off.

MUD:

Let the mud dry and then gently hoover until it is all gone. Regular vacuuming and brushing will ensure that any dirt is regularly removed from your carpet.

ABRASH:

Our dyeing process and hand spun yarn means that the colour may not always take to the yarn evenly resulting in an effect called abrash. This gives your hand knotted rug its character and life!

FADING:

Despite using the highest quality dyes, no rug is completely impervious to fading. This means that you should rotate your rug every so often to ensure that fading occurs evenly. This will also help with the damage caused by traffic.

STAINS AND SPILLAGES

The most common concern when investing in a luxury rug is what to do in the event of a spillage; while the choice of material can determine how prone the rug will be to staining, knowing how to properly treat a spillage will greatly minimise the chances of damage.

Below is a step-by-step guide to treat and remove spillages and stains from your rug.

1. Carefully blot the stain with paper towels or a white cloth. This removes any excess moisture.

2. Moisten the stain with warm water (make sure this isn't too hot) and continue to blot with paper towels or a white cloth. Continue to do so until there is no visible stain transfer on the cloth or towels, pressing down firmly to remove all moisture.

3. If there is still a visible stain, mix a solution of a delicate soap powder such as Stergine or Woolight with warm water. Use a new towel or non-abrasive sponge and work from the outside in to lift the stain put of the carpet.

4. Once your carpet is completely dry, vacuum or brush to restore the pile's texture.

Visionary Women shifting the Pattern

Behind every Knots rugs lies a story of artistry, tradition and collaboration. But woven even deeper into the fabric of our work is the story of women – visionary, resilient and driven by a desire to create something meaningful. This journal is a celebration of two such women: Bonnie, the founder of Knots Rugs, London and Dolma, one of our most trusted and long-standing production partners based in Nepal. Though worlds apart their lives and work are beautifully linked by a shared passion for rugs, deep respect for craftsmanship, supporting communities and a commitment to empowering women together.

Natural Materials behind every Knots Rug

Each Knots rugs rug weaves a narrative rich not only in color and design but also in materials. The rugs are intricately crafted from materials sourced from the lush silk fields, the majestic Himalayan highlands, and the green hillsides covered with wild nettle. Our rugs are born from nature’s own palette, woven with materials that are as thoughtful as they are beautiful. At Knots Rugs, our work begins long before a single knot is tied. It starts in nature, where the finest, most ethical, and sustainable fibers are found. We work with all the different fibers in the world, from Tibetan wool, Chinese silk, wild silk, nettle, hemp, and cactus.

How a Rug gets its Colours

When you’re thinking of a design for a rug, the first thing that might come to your mind is the intricate pattern or overall artwork. But behind the allure of each beautiful rug lies an important and complicated process which often goes unnoticed - the art of selecting colours.
