Knots Rugs Heritage of Craft and Creativity
Knots Rugs is a London-based rug company known for its distinctive style, unique colouration and dedication to craftsmanship as an art form. From bold contemporary statements to subtle, timeless designs, each rug we create reflects our unique style of expressing original artwork, translated into woven threads that balance bold creativity with timeless design.
The story of Knots spans three generations. It began in the 1930s with Alfred Sutton, Bonnie Sutton’s grandfather, a skilled restorer, artist and expert in antique and oriental textiles. His passion for rugs was passed down through the family, eventually inspiring Bonnie to establish Knots rugs in 2007 as a tribute to that legacy.
Today, Knots continues to honour this heritage while embracing new artistic voices, techniques, and collaboration, bringing together tradition and innovation in every piece.

Our History Knots has its roots spanning three generations
The roots of Knots Rugs stretch across three generations, grounded in a deep appreciation for art, textiles and craftsmanship. The story began in the 1930s with Alfred Sutton, grandfather of founder and Managing Director Bonnie Sutton. Alfred was a true artist and expert in antique and oriental carpets, known for his exceptional skills as a restorer and his fine eye for design. His passion and legacy became the inspiration behind Knots Rugs.
In 2007, Bonnie honoured that legacy by founding Knots Rugs with the help of her father, Bernie Sutton, launching a debut collection that reimagined the iconic Florence Broadhurst wallpaper designs into hand-knotted rugs. The collection premiered at 100% Design that same year, receiving an enthusiastic reception and establishing Knots Rugs as a fresh voice in the world of contemporary rug design.
The following year, Bonnie’s aunt Linny Moss joined the business, bringing her experience from a successful career in fashion, couture and retail. Her creative vision and family connections helped shape Knots into the intimate, design-focused company it is today.
In 2009, Knots underwent a rebrand, marking a shift towards developing original, in-house designs. This new chapter began with the launch of English Eccentrics, the company’s first fully self-directed collection. It was introduced at Domotex in 2010 and later earned a nomination for Elle Decoration’s British Design of the Year in 2013, a proud moment that reflected both the company’s evolving identity and creative ambition.
Knots Rugs continues to honour its family roots while embracing innovation through artist collaborations, bespoke projects, and collections that merge storytelling, material, and identity.
Hello, Kings Road
2011 The company opened its flagship showroom on the prestigious Kings Road, Chelsea.
In the heart of Chelsea, Knots Rugs opened its flagship showroom on the prestigious Kings Road, marking a significant step in the company’s creative journey. From this base, the brand has continued to evolve, producing landmark collections that blend tradition, innovation and fine art.
Among these are the acclaimed 17th Century Modern and Classic collections, as well as the ongoing Your Floor is the Canvas series, an ever-growing body of work created in collaborations with artists from around the world. These pieces blur the line between artwork and textile, inviting people to reconsider where the painting ends and the rug begins.
Knots Rugs has been honoured with numerous industry awards, recognising the creative ambition and craftsmanship behind each piece. In 2022, we received the Best Modern Select award at the prestigious Carpet Design Awards at Domotex for Fresco, a design collaboration with Blackpop and the Sir John Soane Museum.
In 2024 we were awarded Best Modern Design Deluxe at Domotex for the Raw Earth collection by artist Stefan Heyer, a deeply expressive series exploring texture, nature, and abstraction. That same year, our Nat Maks collection, featuring hand-marbled paper translated into textile form, was honoured with a Livingetc Style Award, celebrating innovation in modern interior design.
Each of these recognitions reflects the shared dedication between artist, designer, and weaver, allowing Knots Rugs to continually push the boundaries of contemporary rug-making.

Collaborations Our Artists and Designer Collaborations
At Knots Rugs, collaboration is at the heart of what we do. We work closely with artists and designers from around the world, translating their creative visions into hand-knotted rugs that blur the line between fine art and functional design.
Over the past few years, our Artists Collaboration series, ‘Your Floor is the Canvas’, has grown into a defining part of the Knots Rugs identity. We have launched eight collections to date, each translating the work of contemporary artists into hand-knotted form. We are currently working on our ninth collection in collaboration with Spanish artist Beñat Olaberria, bringing yet another unique artistic voice to life through rug design.
Each design has been carefully transformed into a hand-knotted rug in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, using time-honoured techniques and the finest Tibetan wool and Chinese silk. These pieces not only honour the original artwork but also celebrate the artistry of the weavers who bring them to life.

Custom and Bespoke services
In addition to our core collections, Knots Rugs offers a fully bespoke service, allowing you to create a rug that's truly your own. Whether it's adjusting colours, reimagining patterns, selecting alternative materials or designing to specific shapes and dimensions, we tailor each piece to fit your vision and space.
Our close relationship with our production teams ensures that every detail is carefully considered throughout the process. From the first concept to the final knot, each decision is made with intention, resulting in a rug that not only meets your needs but enhances the design as a whole.
