Children of the Forest Part 1

Stefan Heyer

Enquire for Price

Stefan Heyer’s gestural abstracts delve into both personal and collective histories, weaving together echoes of pop culture, esoteric philosophy, and the quiet drama of the natural world. Children of the Forest – Part I captures this dialogue in a composition that feels at once raw and poetic. Sweeping strokes of muted cream, sand and blush are punctuated by visceral markings of black, green, and vivid turquoise — an expressive field that feels like memory in motion. Translated with great precision by the design team into a beautiful hand knotted rug, each knot embodies Heyer’s instinctive approach, translating painterly gesture into texture and tone.

A statement piece that blurs the line between art and design, this rug invites reflection on impermanence, imagination, and the landscapes within us.

Artist Collaboration

Stefan Heyer

German artist Stefan Heyer is renowned for his gestural abstract paintings — expressive, multi-layered works combining oil, photo-transfer, and mixed media. Using intuitive, trance-like mark making, Heyer’s art explores personal and collective histories, drawing on philosophy, pop culture, and nature.

His ongoing collaboration with Knots Rugs translates his raw painterly energy into textile form. Each design is meticulously hand-knotted in Nepal using fine Tibetan wool and Chinese silk, transforming Heyer’s complex visual language into tactile compositions.

The partnership continues to evolve, producing new rugs each year — including Raw Earth, winner of the Carpet Design Awards 2024. Together, Stefan Heyer and Knots Rugs blur the line between contemporary art and craft, redefining what a hand-knotted rug can be.
