Artist Spotlight: Stefan Heyer

27 Oct 2022

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: STEFAN HEYER

ABOUT THE ARTIST

German Artist Stefan Heyer specialises in gestural abstract paintings which are extremely layered as he drips paint and scrawls words with the use of mixed mediums including oil paints, phototransfer, dried plants, emulsion, pencil and oil pastels on canvas, giving these abstract pieces their intriguing complexity.

Using a combination of intuitive physicality of highly energetic trance-like strokes and mark makings, along with a more highly conscientious process, Heyer’s works are an exploration of histories, both personal and shared, and are inspired by pop culture, esoteric and philosophical issues and nature

‘A painting should remain a mystery’

'AWAKEN THE SPIRITS PART 1'

Part of the latest Artist Collaboration collection with German Artist Stefan Heyer, ‘Awaken The Spirits Part 1’ is a diptych design (meaning an artwork consisting of two pieces). This piece has been skilfully hand-knotted in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, using the world’s oldest traditional skills in the finest Tibetan wool and Chinese silk.

'AWAKEN THE SPIRITS PART 2'

Using a combination of intuitive physicality of highly energetic trance-like strokes and mark makings, along with a more highly conscientious process, Heyer uses oil paints, phototransfer, dried plants, emulsion, pencil and oil pastels on canvas, giving these abstract pieces their intriguing complexity.

'THE PATH OF HOLLOW WORDS'

From canvas to carpet, in this original piece, Heyer has even included the use of dried plants and other foraging. Hand-knotted in a fusion of wool and silk, the lustrous accents encourage you to look closer and discover Heyer’s signature writing hidden within the design.

Knots Rugs fourth instalment of the ‘Your Floor Is The Canvas’ features three new designs, translating Stefan Heyer’s original contemporary mixed media artwork into modern masterpieces. Each piece has been skilfully hand-knotted in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal using the world’s oldest traditional skills and the finest Tibetan wool and Chinese silk.

Bespoke sizes and colourways are also available upon request.

Translating Art into Rugs

At Knots Rugs, the story of each rug goes far beyond the finished product. It starts with an idea, a spark of inspiration and grows into something tangible, something you can feel beneath your feet but also connect on a deeper level. The journey of rug making begins with a design and what makes our story different is our collaborations with different artists, in which we translate their arts into rugs. Creating a living piece of story and art for your homes.

The Craft of Nepalese Carpets

Amid the rise of mass production and machine-made goods, some crafts remain deeply connected to their roots, carrying traditions that span-generations. Nepali hand-knotted carpet is an example of one such treasure - a handwoven masterpiece that tells the story of culture, community and craftsmanship.
