Knots Rugs is proud to present our new artist collaboration with Barcelona based artist Alicia Gimeno. The collection was inspired by a trip to the Chepang community in Nepal as part of the Bahadur Social Project, an NGO focused on improving the lives of children. The four rugs in the collection are named after 4 little girls Alicia met.
'Subiksha was a baby of about two years old. It was special to meet her because, at that time, my own two-year-old baby was waiting for me in Barcelona. It was impossible not to think about the differences between the lives of Gala (my daughter) and Subiksha, but at the same time, it was impossible not to notice the similarities between the two. That innocent charm that overwhelms you, as only the gaze of such a small child can. Subiksha used to have her eyes painted black and a curious symbol on her forehead (a symbol that wasn't the traditional dot); these were symbols meant to ward off evil spirits'.

Alicia Gimeno
Barcelona born artist Alicia Gimeno combines the organic forms of Catalan modernism with a deep interest in spirituality, particularly as expressed in Japanese calligraphy.
Trained in graphic design in Mexico, Alicia was drawn early on to the gestural beauty of calligraphy. Her exploration led her to oriental calligraphy, where she discovered the spiritual depth of the written word, seeing it as an expression beyond language.
Alicia’s work is characterized by abstract calligraphies infused with botanical elements. She uses minimal color, focusing instead on the energetic expression of brushstrokes, inviting viewers into a contemplative state. Through her art, she seeks to connect us to the simple, pure aspects of nature, encouraging introspection and a sense of unity with the natural world.
Her work reflects concepts from Eastern philosophy, like Wabi Sabi—finding beauty in imperfection—and Ma, the significance of negative space within context.
